SOBİTÜRK 2026
IV. International Symposium on Social Sciences and Turkish Culture
"Clothing Culture"
CALL FOR PAPERS
Dear Scholars and Researchers,
As one of the most visible and symbolically rich aspects of social life, clothing has historically served as an important indicator of individual identity, cultural belonging, social status, and sense of aesthetics. Today, however, discussions surrounding globalization, digitalization, fast fashion, consumer culture, and sustainability have transformed clothing practices from merely aesthetic preferences into multilayered phenomena with social, economic, environmental, and ethical dimensions.
Planned as a continuation of the SOBİTÜRK Symposium, which was organized last year under the theme of “Food Culture/Gastronomy,” the SOBİTÜRK 2026 themed around Clothing Culture aims to examine the phenomenon of clothing from a multidisciplinary social sciences perspective. Among the primary objectives of the symposium are to investigate the transformations of clothing culture throughout the Turkish cultural geography from past to present and to discuss the interaction between traditional clothing patterns and modern/global fashion understandings.
The influence of the global fashion industry on local clothing cultures, the transformation or disappearance of traditional garments, the role of clothing in identity construction, and the reshaping of social structures through consumption habits constitute significant contemporary areas of discussion. In addition, environmental crises and debates on ethical production have brought concepts such as “sustainable fashion” and “eco-fashion” to the agenda, making them key factors shaping the future of clothing culture.
Within this context, our symposium aims to reveal the aesthetic values and symbolic meanings of Turkish clothing culture while also discussing how this cultural heritage can be preserved and adapted to contemporary life. With the contributions of scholars from various disciplines within the social sciences, clothing culture will be addressed from historical, sociological, anthropological, economic, geographical, artistic, and literary perspectives, thereby providing an interdisciplinary platform for understanding broader social transformations.
The topics listed below are intended to serve as guiding topics for researchers wishing to submit papers. However, submissions are not limited to these themes; original studies from different fields of the social sciences that are related to the main theme of the symposium are also welcome.
Abstracts should be submitted in accordance with the abstract submission form until 19 June 2026 to: sobiturk@marmara.edu.tr. The languages of the papers include Turkish, European languages like English, German, French, and other national languages of the Turkic Republics. Participation may take place either in person or online. Submitted papers will be evaluated through a double-blind peer-review process in accordance with scientific ethical principles.Full texts of the papers presented at the symposium and successfully passing the peer-review process may be published in the journals specified under the “Publication Opportunities” section. In addition, selected papers will also be published as a full-text proceedings book by an internationally recognized publishing house.Detailed information regarding the symposium can be accessed via the relevant web page.
We would be delighted to welcome you to this scholarly gathering, which will be enriched by your valuable scientific contributions.
